Artist Bio
Reed has been named in memory of the Australian modernist artist: Sunday Reed.
Sunday Reed was at the heart of it all: brilliant, bohemian and fragile, as well as generous and full of vitality. No one could rival her. She's been a source of public fascination for decades, the focus of the enduring mystique of the talented Heide circle that helped shape Australian art from the 1930s on.
John and Sunday Reed are arguably Australia’s most famous art patrons and a saucy and deeply unusual couple they were too. Part of their patronage involved free love and they didn’t mind the occasional ménage a trois either. Yet despite their Bohemian tendencies, the Reeds hailed from establishment families in Hobart and Melbourne.
The artists who benefitted from their patronage include some of the greats of Australian art – Sidney Nolan, Sam Atyeo, Albert Tucker, John Perceval, Arthur Boyd, Charles Blackman and Noel Counihan. But as Modern Love explains and elucidates, some of these artists were at the same time emotionally, if not artistically, damaged by their relationship with the Reeds.
John and Sunday made a lasting contribution to Australian culture through their support of creative endeavours in the visual arts, literature and architecture. In the mid-1950s the Reeds established the Gallery of Contemporary Art and in 1958, with the assistance of friend and entrepreneur Georges Mora, they re-launched the gallery as the Museum of Modern Art of Australia. This eventually led to the formal establishment of the Heide museum.
